The Thing About Luck by Cynthia Kadohata
Someone has to cut those big fields of wheat in Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Summer's family is one of those who do that job. Summer lives in Kansas and when her parents have to go to Japan to take care of relatives, she goes with her grandparents and brother, Jaz, and her dog to help her grandmother, Obaachan, cook for the field hands although she ends up doing much more. This book explains how the fields are combined and a little about how the people live when doing that work. It is a great book for a student of middle school age to read as they are looking at the vast fields of wheat.
